Tips for using extension cords

Extension cords are indispensable power auxiliary tools in daily life and are widely used in homes, offices and industrial scenarios. However, improper use may bring safety hazards. The following are several practical usage suggestions to help users use extension cords more safely and efficiently.

First, it is crucial to choose the right extension cord. Electrical appliances of different powers need to match extension cords of different specifications. High-power devices (such as electric heaters and air conditioners) should use extension cords with thick wire diameters and high rated currents to avoid heating or short circuits due to overload. When purchasing, pay attention to the rated power marked on the product to ensure that it meets the usage requirements.

Second, avoid "one plug for multiple uses" or "cascade extension cords". Connecting multiple high-power devices at the same time will greatly increase the line load, which may cause overheating or even fire. If you need to expand multiple sockets, it is recommended to use a distribution box with overload protection, or arrange extension cords in different areas. Cascading extension cords (i.e. extension cords connected to extension cords) will further increase the current burden and easily cause circuit failures.

In addition, the placement environment of the extension cord should also be paid attention to. Avoid placing extension cords near moisture, heat or flammable materials, such as in bathrooms, near stoves or in cluttered corners. When used outdoors, choose waterproof extension cords and make sure the plug and socket are tightly connected to prevent rain from seeping in.

After long-term use, extension cords may have problems such as aging of the outer skin and loose plugs. Regularly check the cables for cracks, wear or heat. If any problems are found, they should be immediately stopped and replaced. Temporarily wrapping the damaged area with tape will not fundamentally solve the problem, but may bury hidden dangers.

Correct use of extension cords can effectively improve the safety of electricity use. Following the above suggestions can not only extend the life of the equipment, but also add a layer of protection to the home and work environment.
